Top 10 Things to do in Interlaken during Winter

Sivan, our student travel expert contributor, wrote this post!

Interlaken, one of the most beautiful cities in the world is a great place to spend a winter getaway. You will have many memorable experiences, both on and below the mountaintops.

Some activities are only offered in summer. However, there are many opportunities to explore the area when snow begins. The hub of adrenaline-inducing outdoor activities in Interlaken is Outdoor Interlaken. You can find all kinds of tours, guides for snowsports, and all the gear that you need for your adventures at Outdoor Interlaken. My weekend was filled with unforgettable experiences and non-stop exploration.

These are my top ten winter activities in Interlaken!

Paragliding at Interlaken

Nothing is more thrilling than running up a mountain and flying above snow-capped trees and shimmering lakes. Outdoor Interlaken will help you find the best paragliding spot in the city.

It was time to fly after gathering all the gear and climbing up to the summit of a mountain. My guide was behind me as I ran off the mountain, and I flew through the air while I enjoyed the beautiful sights of Interlaken.

To capture the flight, the pilot had brought a GoPro. I was able to purchase the photos after having viewed them.

This was an unforgettable experience, and it is a must-do while visiting Interlaken.

Swiss Food and Culture Tour

Two great things are the hallmarks of Switzerland: cheese and chocolate. My guide and I met at the Outdoor Interlaken shop.

We walked together around Interlaken, learning about its history and the importance of these delicacies to the region.

First, I stopped at a local cheese shop. There, I was able to try four types of local cheeses and learn about how they were made. Next, we visited the Funky Chocolate Club. Here I was able to taste different kinds of chocolate and learn about their uses.

Funky Chocolate Club offers chocolate-making classes, where you can make your own chocolate bars to take home.

We explored the town, learning about medieval Switzerland and traditional wood-carving. We ended the tour at a local farm, where we said hello to happy cows and sampled their fresh milk.

This tour gave an excellent overview of Interlaken. Who doesn’t like cheese and chocolate?

The company offers guided walking tours as well as private, customized tours of the region.

Sky Diving Interlaken

You might want to skydive in Switzerland if you are going to do it. Take the ultimate leap into the winter sky by flying up in a piloted plane with a professional guide. The entire way down, you will be able to see breathtaking mountains and landscapes.

Interlaken Snowsports

Skiing and snowboarding are a hallmark of the Swiss Alps. Outdoor Interlaken has packages available for all levels.

The shop can rent you all the gear that you need so you don’t have to worry about taking it with you. Depending on the package you select, guides will either take you up or down the mountain.

Snowshoeing is an excellent alternative if you don’t feel confident on skis, snowboards, or other types of snow shoes. Guides will provide all the equipment and guidance needed to enjoy the outdoors and hike the snowy mountains.

Boat Cruise

Interlaken lies between two beautiful lakes, Lake Brienz and Luke Thun. Boat cruises are the best way to see the most beautiful sights along the waterways. Oberhofen is the fairy-tale castle that lies on the lake.

Take a tour of Lake Brienz and visit beautiful waterfalls and picturesque villages. You can take a boat from Lake Brienz to the Christmas Markets starting in December.

Outdoor Interlaken offers a Day Pass that allows you to travel as many times as you wish on scheduled boats. You can make your own hop on hop off day tour by choosing from the many Interlaken boats.

Go up to Jungfrau Mountain

This is a popular day trip from the city, and it’s well-known for being Europe’s highest point. Although it takes some time and money, the view is well worth it.

Play on the Vertical Rush

You can find a boost of adrenaline at the Outdoor Interlaken’s Adventure Park, located in the treetops. You can free fall from the Giant Swing. Also, you can jump on the BASE Jump Simulator. Race along the longest and fastest zip line in Seilpark and then test your balance on Highline.

Visit Schilthorn Mountain

This is an unforgettable excursion to Interlaken. You can take a train ride from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. Then, you can hop on a cable car up to Grutschalp and then catch the train to Murren.

You can take a cable car from there to Birg or a connecting car up to Schilthorn. This journey will allow you to see the best of the UNESCO World Heritage trio: Elger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains.

Piz Gloria is the first revolving restaurant in the world. You can also enjoy lunch at their Piz Gloria or visit the 007 James Bond exhibit, which is dedicated to one of the films that was shot there.

Night Sledding with Fondue

Even after the sun sets, there are still many adventures. I had all my gear purchased from Outdoor Interlaken and hopped on a gondola to climb up to the top.

We sledded down the mountain with guides at our side. It was an unforgettable experience to slide down a mountain in the dark.

After climbing the mountain, we were taken back to Interlaken and seated at the restaurant of one of the oldest hotels. The famous cheese fondue is a signature of this restaurant. This was the perfect end to a perfect evening.

Outdoor Interlaken is a big thank you for hosting me during my stay in Interlaken. These opinions and thoughts are my own.
